The people of Willenhall came out in their dozens on a sunny Bank Holiday weekend to protest against what they say is a rise in burglaries and violent crime.In the last year, there has been an armed raid at the Ladbrokes and a burglary at the social club which was left in tatters.The residents also feel vehicle crime and burglaries have increased, and claim there aren’t enough police to patrol the streets which could prevent the incidents.As a result of this they felt they needed to take matters into their own hands.Residents take matters into their own hands over crime levelsHowever, police have said it is incorrect to suggest there has been a significant upturn in robbery and burglary offences.What did police say? Coventry Police Chief Inspector Hasson Shigdar, said: “We value the community spirit in Willenhall and the feedback of residents we’ve spent years winning the trust of.”We appreciate that any criminal offence can be distressing for victims but also have a ripple effect and undermine people’s confidence across the wider community.”However, it is not correct to suggest there has been a significant upturn in robbery and burglary offences in Willenhall; current crime rates in Willenhall are in line with the average for an area of that size.”There have been 162 recorded burglaries across Willenhall and Binley in the last 12 months but that figure includes a significant number of garage, shed and outbuilding break ins which are also classified as ‘burglaries’.”There have been five personal robberies in Willenhall and Binley in the last three months, two of which have been thefts of pizzas from take away delivery drivers. And we have not had any recent armed robbery reports in Willenhall where firearms have been used.”We have a well established neighbourhood police team in Willenhall including two officers who have patrolled the beat there for six years and know the area well the local inspector is always happy to attend community meetings to hear concerns and explain what action is being taken.”Following up on previous meetings with the community, we have committed to carrying out regular patrols and have been targeting key offenders.
